86 Films Watched, and Here’s What Stood Out: My Favorite Films of 2024 (Second Half) 🎥

Updated: 3 days ago

As we close out 2024, I’ve watched a total of 86 films this year (This doesn't count TV shows or re-watches). While I already shared my favorites from the first half of the year, it's time to dive into the second half of the year and highlight the films that really stood out to me. Horror, in particular, crept its way into my movie-watching routine more than ever this year, and I was pleasantly surprised by some amazing storytelling.

Top Picks That Stole the Spotlight

Horror Makes Its Mark: One of the biggest surprises for me this year was A Quiet Place: Day One. I’ve never been a huge fan of horror, but this film captured my attention with its gripping tension and emotional depth. The chemistry between Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn was incredible, and though the alien encounters were intense and suspenseful, it was the human story that really resonated. The suspense was almost too much for me at times, but the relationships and storytelling kept me hooked.

Another standout was The Substance. With its unique plot and Demi Moore's remarkable performance, it was unlike anything else I watched this year. The fresh perspective and thought-provoking themes stuck with me long after the credits rolled.

Epic Blockbusters and Unforgettable Performances: Wicked was absolutely

mesmerizing. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande delivered powerhouse performances, and their voices elevated the film to a whole new level. This one left me in awe.

Gladiator II brought the epic grandeur I hoped for, with a compelling story, phenomenal performances, and an expansive scope that honored the original while carving its own path.

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 was another personal favorite. Kevin Costner's ability to tell sweeping historical stories shines here. This film gave me a deep appreciation for the ancestry and history of the American West.

Twisters offered pure spectacle. While it didn’t emotionally move me as much as others, the thrilling visuals made it a fun and exciting watch.

Carry On, starring Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman, was like Die Hard with an everyday hero trying to protect his family. The gripping action and heartfelt and chilling performances made it a surprising film I'd watch again.

Lastly, Deadpool & Wolverine was everything I wanted it to be. Seeing Hugh Jackman reprise his role as Wolverine alongside Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool was a delight. The humor, action, and chemistry between the two had me laughing and thoroughly entertained.

Honorable Mentions: Hidden Gems & Surprises

While these didn’t make my top list, they were still memorable for their unique qualities:

  • The Bikeriders: Austin Butler shone in this fascinating look at motorcycle gang culture.

  • Alien Romulus: A continuation of the Alien franchise with a heartfelt sibling dynamic, even if I found myself missing the original's Sigourney Weaver touch.

  • Speak No Evil: James McAvoy delivered a chilling performance, transitioning from charismatic to terrifying as the villain.

  • Smile 2: Naomi Scott elevated this sequel, which surpassed the original with its suspense and unsettling twists.

  • Caddo Lake: A surprisingly good film with plot twists and stunning location shots.

  • Heretic: A haunting and deeply unsettling story featuring Hugh Grant.

  • Longlegs: A creepy, artsy thriller with the incredible Nicholas Cage.
